Love & Updates

First things first, I made a quick update to the Christmas list. I added The LEGO Book, which is a cool book that I found at BrickCon earlier this year. $24 ain’t bad for the history of one of the most culturally influencing “children’s” toys of our lifetimes.
Secondly, I wanted to share a movie trailer with ya’ll. Love seems like it could be really great. Not surprisingly, it looks like it’s got some pretty strong sci-fi elements to it. Mix in some space stations, skateboarding and brunettes in corsets and you’ve got me hook, line and sinker. The weird thing is that it seems to be in very strong connection with the band Angels & Airwaves, which I don’t know a lot about, but they sound quite emo. Maybe I’m wrong and the music will be really great, but most of my excitement is based around the visuals. Watch the trailer here, then check out the director’s site here.

Let’s Take This Seriously Guys

America’s Funniest Videos is one of my favorite shows. Seriously, go check my Facebook profile. Not every clip is golden though, I know that. Maybe Bergeron just needs a nicely laid out list.
LESS:
• People screaming while riding roller coasters. It was never funny, it never will be.
• Mascots doing something dumb (unless it’s getting in a fight with other mascots.)
• Fake ass videos that people made just to get on AFV.
• Boats accidentally driving up onto the beach. It reminds me too much of the San Francisco scenes from The Lost World.
• People dropping guns after firing them. They’re lucky they didn’t take a bullet to the genitals.

MORE:
• Exercise balls to the face.
• Brutal falls down the stairs.
• Animals eating/licking something that they instantly regret.
• People sneaking up on other people and scaring them with loud noises. That never gets old. Bonus points if the sneaker is someone really famous that doesn’t seem like a practical joker. Edward Norton, Al Gore and Reese Witherspoon are all good places to start.
• People walking into sliding doors. So funny, every time.

There you go, run along ABC.

Video Game Brain

If you’ve ever lived with Ashlinn and I, you’ll know that one thing that can stop either of us in our tracks is video game brain. You’re present, but you usually interact with strange one-liners that don’t actually make sense. It’s odd, but neither of us really mind when it happens, probably because we are both very aware of it’s existence and the feelings you have when you’ve got it.
This brings me to Robbie Cooper, a photographer whose projects often involve both real and virtual subjects. His most recent project is titled Immersion and can be seen on his website, robbiecooper.org. Using methods pioneered by Errol Morris, he captures facial expressions, body language and vocal speech of subjects as they play video games. It’s simple, but hard to pull yourself away once you start watching.

Impatience

Around the middle of April, many websites started buzzing about the soon to be released Hulu iPhone app and how “badass” it was. Well folks, where the fuck is it?
Where is my Daily Show?
Where is my Heroes?
Where is my It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia?
Where is my self control when there are hundreds of hours of television just a few taps away?

P.S. Check back tomorrow for everybody’s favorite time of the year, Christmas List time!

Quick On The Humor

I’m assuming you all are well aware of the incredibly important events that happened last night between Kanye West and Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards. Some of you may even be aware of the event that occurred between Obama and Joe Wilson during a little speech about probably nothing relevant to most Americans. Were you as quick as this Youtuber? Could someone please After Effects in a little furious Serena Williams just for good measure?

Good Call

The Skateboard Film Festival was a few weeks ago. I only caught opening night, but I’m sure the next day was just as awesome. One of the coolest things that did was a Final Cut Pro Battle. THIS is the winning entry and I think they made the right decision. Good skating, better editing.

3 Sci-Fi Films You May Have Missed

Moon – This one may not have made it to your area yet, it’s still making the festival rounds. I saw it a few weeks ago at SIFF and I was quite impressed by both the strong story and the use of miniatures over CG. It relates heavily to the space madness seen in Solaris and 2001, but I felt like it took it in a more satisfying direction. Sam Rockwell plays “quiet/confused” better than most, especially while watching himself jump rope in the next room over. TrailerIMDb

Sunshine – It’s not surprising that Danny Boyle is finally blowing people’s minds. This film should have had a much larger reaction, in my opinion. Dying sun, a bomb the size of Manhattan, martyrdom, gold suits and the worst sunburn you could imagine. I really hope Boyle returns to casting Cillian Murphy in the future. TrailerIMDb

The Mist – Based on a Stephen King novella about monsters rolling into town in a cloud of mist. Takes place in Maine, ’nuff said. TrailerIMDb

Bonus: Primer – Very very very cool. Interesting method of storytelling from a director (and producer, writer, main actor and editor) who isn’t afraid to leave you with a few questions as the credits roll. TrailerIMDb

Keyboard Cat Hits the Refresh Button on Life

Matt Bagwell has done it again! Last night he supplied me with weeks of entertainment via Play Him Off, Keyboard Cat. This guy has a killer formula: take stale Youtube videos, cut away to a cat playing a keyboard. Done. The creator has single-handedly released a breath of fresh air into the internet. That’s right, he did “Walker Told Me I Have AIDS”, he did “Bike Crashes Into Building”, he even did “I’m Passing Out.”
I know that I’ve claimed some bullshit stuff in the past, but I’m pretty sure this will be bigger than Google within a few weeks.
